About The Course

The Dry Needling course is structured into three modules: the Theory Module, Practical Module 1, and Practical Module 2.  This configuration is consistent with many dry-needling courses offered globally. Other courses may use different terminology, such as Level 1 and Level 2 or Basic and Advanced, but the terminology is inconsequential as there is no universal standard. A comprehensive course will always include both theoretical and practical components.

The Dry Needling Course is designed in accordance with the South African Society of Physiotherapy (SASP) standard guidelines for dry needling training. It is accredited for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) by the SASP accreditation committee with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). This accreditation ensures high training standards and permits professionals who complete the course to legally utilize the techniques taught.

The Dry Needling Course aligns with other internationally presented courses; however, it is not accredited by health regulators outside of South Africa due to varying regulations across countries.

Professionals intending to practice outside South Africa must register with the health regulator of the respective country. This process typically involves a review of the undergraduate qualifications, training standards, and all postgraduate training completed, including dry needling. Some countries may require the completion of a locally accredited course, while others may accept HPCSA accreditation. However, certain countries may restrict physiotherapists from performing dry needling due to scope of practice regulations.

It is important to note that there is no single international accreditation for dry needling training due to the absence of a unified international regulatory body. The Dry Needling Course is accredited by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as it is presented in South Africa and regulated by the HPCSA.

Theory Module

The Theory Module is a self-study course comprising a theory manual and videos. Participants are required to complete a theory quiz with a passing score of 75%. This module covers the physiology and mechanisms of dry needling, as well as the clinical reasoning necessary to apply the technique effectively and safely. The Theory Module is a prerequisite for, and is included with, enrollment in Practical Module 1.

Practical Modules

Prior to the practical modules, participants will receive an anatomy manual that covers all the muscle groups included in the specific module. This manual serves to introduce participants to detailed anatomical information and prepares them for the practical application of the techniques.

Both Practical Module 1 and Module 2 are presented over the course of two days each. During these intensive sessions, each muscle group is thoroughly discussed, and the dry needling technique is demonstrated. Participants then practice the technique under supervision and guidance to ensure that the skill is properly acquired.

Each participant also receives a comprehensive manual, designed to serve as a detailed resource for reviewing the assessment and treatment techniques of each muscle group.
